We need to persuade Canadians to stop being ashamed of the riches our great nation holds.

With Doug Ford winning a second term as premier of Ontario, the province is poised to enter a mining renaissance. Between the commitments made to the sector during the provincial election and those set out in the federal budget this spring, Ontario has an unprecedented opportunity to become a global leader in mining again. The world has yet to embrace the FACT that we cannot have a zero emissions or carbon neutral world without the mining industry. We will need mining to provide the minerals that we use to transport and store clean energy. FULL STOP. PERIOD. The mining industry will need to be supported by governments who are foward thinking and environmentally focused. Governments that now claim to be environmentally forward thinking but have policies that undermine the mining industry have not yet made the correlation between development and the clean energy race. The field of Environmental, Social and Governance or ESG (formerly known as Corporate and Social Responsibility or CSR) has exploded over the past few years to become today's investing and governance buzzword. Compliance, reporting and investment professionals are all hoping to capitalize on the growth within the industry. I'd like to take a moment to point out that the mining industry is where ESG began. Mining companies, for better and worse, have been working towards positive economic and social development in the communities where they operate for decades...with very limited positive accolades and discussion on the international stage. Lessons can be learned from the past successes and mistakes of the mining industry. I think it's high time the industry and its professionals start to speak up and loudly profess our capacity and ability to drive significant and positive impact through stakeholder engagement, investment and support.
